Studio Policy

This Studio Policy explains how lessons actually run day to day at Wes Davis' “I Wanna Rock” School of Music — particularly for students under 18. It sits alongside our Terms of Use, Refund & Cancellation Policy, and Liability Waiver, and forms part of the Terms for any in-person lesson.

1. Who this applies to

It applies to every in-person lesson, whether at the studio in Eureka or in your own home, and to the parts of it that make sense for online lessons (conduct, illness, and recording). Where something applies only to students under 18, it says so.

2. Students under 18 — arrival and pick-up

• A responsible adult must bring a student under 18 to the studio and collect them. Please plan to arrive a few minutes before the lesson starts and to be back for the end of it.
• Please do not drop a student off early and leave unless you have arranged it with Wes in advance. Outside their lesson time a student is not supervised, and the studio is not a place for a child to wait alone.
• If someone else is collecting the student — the other parent, a grandparent, a friend's family — tell us in advance. If we have not been told, we will call the guardian on the account before releasing the student to anyone else.
• If nobody arrives at the end of the lesson, Wes will stay with the student and call the guardian on the account. Please make sure the phone number on your account is one you will actually answer during lesson time.
• Students 18 and over may of course come and go independently.

3. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay

A parent or guardian is always welcome to sit in on their child's lesson, and is never required to leave. For younger beginners it often helps, because it makes practice at home easier when the adult has heard what was asked for. If you would rather wait outside or in the car, that is fine too. Whether there is space to sit comfortably depends on the room — ask Wes when you book.

4. Communication with students under 18

Scheduling, billing, and anything else about lessons goes to the parent or guardian on the account, not directly to the student. If a teenage student and their guardian both want the student included in scheduling messages, that is fine — just tell us, and the guardian stays on the thread. Wes does not arrange lessons privately with a student under 18 without the guardian knowing.

5. Illness

• Please keep a sick student home. Lessons happen at close quarters, often sharing an instrument, so an illness spreads easily.
• If a student has a fever, or has been vomiting, please stay home until they have been clear for a full 24 hours without medication.
• Illness is exactly the kind of situation the late-cancellation charge is meant to be waived for. Tell us as early as you can and ask — we will normally waive the charge and find another time. That waiver is Wes’s to give under the Refund & Cancellation Policy rather than something the policy grants automatically, but keeping a sick child at home is precisely what it exists for, and you should never feel you have to choose between that and a fee.
• Wes will do the same in reverse: if he is unwell, you will hear as early as possible and the lesson will be rescheduled or refunded, your choice.
• An online lesson is often a good substitute for a student who is well enough to play but should not be around other people.

6. Late arrival

Lessons run for the time booked and end at the scheduled time, because another student is usually booked after. If you arrive late, the lesson still ends when it was due to end — Wes will make the most of the time that is left. If Wes is running late, the student gets their full booked lesson time, or the missing minutes back on another day.

7. Instruments and equipment

• Bring your own instrument to a lesson where you reasonably can, and bring anything the instrument needs — picks, sticks, a strap, a tuner, a cable, spare strings.
• Larger instruments that live at the studio, such as a drum kit or a piano, are there to be played in lessons.
• Please treat studio instruments and equipment with care. If something gets damaged through ordinary use in a lesson, that is simply wear and tear and not something you will be charged for; deliberate or reckless damage is a different matter and the responsible adult may be asked to cover the repair.
• Please do not leave an instrument at the studio for storage unless Wes has agreed to it. We cannot take responsibility for personal property left behind.

8. A respectful space

Lessons should be somewhere a student of any age feels comfortable making mistakes. We ask everyone — students, parents, and instructors — to be courteous. Wes may end a lesson early, and future lessons may be declined, if anyone behaves abusively, threateningly, or unsafely, or attends a lesson under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 9. Keeping students safe

Private music teaching means an adult and a child in a room together, often one-to-one. That is normal and necessary for lessons to work, and it is also exactly the arrangement that deserves clear ground rules rather than assumptions. Ours:

• A parent or guardian is welcome at any lesson, unannounced, at any time. No lesson is closed to a parent, and you never need to ask permission or give notice.
• Lessons happen in an open, visible setting — doors open or with a clear line of sight where the room allows.
• Contact with a student under 18 goes through their guardian, as set out in §4. Wes does not message a minor student privately about anything.
• Lessons happen at the studio, at your home, or online — not anywhere else, and not off-schedule, without a guardian arranging it.
• If a child ever tells us something that suggests they are being harmed, we will act on it and report it to the appropriate authorities. We treat that as an obligation, both legally and as a matter of conscience.

10. Recording during lessons

Nobody records a lesson — audio or video, in person or online — unless everyone taking part has agreed in advance, and for a student under 18 it is the parent or guardian who decides. Recording a bit of a lesson for practice at home is encouraged; just ask first, and keep it for the student's own use. Using a student's image, name, or playing in anything promotional is always a separate, written, opt-in permission that you are free to refuse. The full terms are in §10 of our Terms of Use.

11. In-home lessons

For lessons taught in your home, please provide a reasonably quiet, adequately lit space with room to play, and secure any pet that might be a problem. For a student under 18, a parent or legal guardian must be at home for the whole of an in-home lesson. If no adult is there when the instructor arrives, the lesson will not go ahead. 12. Weather and travel

On the North Coast a lesson occasionally has to move for weather, a road closure, or a power cut. If Wes cannot safely travel or teach, that is an instructor-initiated cancellation and you get a full refund or a free reschedule as of right — see §5 of the Refund & Cancellation Policy. If conditions make your journey unsafe, tell us as early as you can: this is treated the same way as illness, and Wes will normally waive the late-cancellation charge and reschedule, or switch you to an online lesson instead. Nobody should be driving in bad conditions to protect a lesson fee.
